Running – C25k Week 3

Tonight I begain week 3 on the Couch 2 5k challenge. I am usually watching The Biggest Loser on Tuesday nights, but decided to do my workout while watching my favorite show. I moved my treadmill into my bedroom so I’ll be all ready to go. Another reason for moving my equipment, is because my daughter is moving back home soon and I have to empty out her bedroom. Goodbye exercise room.

My new workout space

I was a little nervous about this week’s workout since I have to jump from running 90 second intervals to 3 minutes. At the same time, I am confident that I can do this! I got my shoes, my water and my pedometer ready and hit the treadmill.

One thing I found out rather quickly, is that I need to bring my big fan into my bedroom when I’m working out. The ceiling fan just didn’t do the job. I was able to increase my speed during tonight’s workout. Except during the last 3 minute interval, I had to slow down some. I’m hoping workout 2 will be a little easier.

After finishing the workout, I noticed my ankle began hurting. Since I’ve sprained this one several times, it gives me trouble occasionally. I immediately got the ice pack and elevated it. After a few minutes it felt much better, so I did some strength training with my weights.

I felt optimistic about the workout tonight. It was a little harder than week 2, but I love the challenge! I guess I have to get used to using ice packs and muscle cream after running workouts. I really want to move my running outside and get off the treadmill. Mental note: find a running trail to use this week.

Runners just do it – they run for the finish line even if someone else has reached it first.  ~Author Unknown

Zumba + running = happy

I did a Zumba workout on the PS3 before getting on the treadmill to do the last Couch to 5k workout for week 2. I thought doing a pre-run workout might help me. I love Zumba! I know I’m not the best at it – my hips just don’t move the way the instructors do. But that is the joy of doing it at home in my living room. I sent my hubby out for errands so I could have the living room (and the t.v./remote) to myself.

Zumba for PS3

I’m going to be ready for the next 5k I do, which looks like will be the Komen for the Cure in October. That is…unless I find another one to do in the next few months.

I finished the 3rd workout for week 2 on the C25k challenge. It seemed easier today. Maybe that’s because I warmed up with Zumba before doing it. I was able to do the intervals with little trouble and able to increase my speed a little. After I finished the workout, I decided to do some 30 second sprints, like I’ve seen on the Biggest Loser, to push myself. That was exhilarating! Its amazing what you can do when you push yourself! I’ll definitely do that again.

I feel good about finishing week 2 on this challenge and looking forward to starting week 3. Now its rest and relaxation time for me. It’s time to prepare for another week. Have a great week!

Where did my motivation go?

I’m trying to find the motivation to get up and exercise this morning. Its Saturday morning and I usually get a workout in after making breakfast for my family. I slept in a little later than usual since my cat, Tiger woke me up in the middle of the night. He is so cute and lovable, but I really don’t like it when he walks all over me while I’m sleeping.

I got up and made breakfast (after making the coffee first of course!)

and now…here I am sitting in front of the computer struggling to get up and workout.

I don’t like the fact that I can be extremely motivated for working out one day and then I lose it. We are having nice weather here and an outside walk/jog would be lovely. Maybe I need Bob and Jillian from The Biggest Loser to come and drag me out of my chair!

I really do not like the picture below, but it does remind me that I can do it! I can give you a long list of excuses of why I don’t have the time to exercise, but I feel guilty with that kind of thinking. With a family, full time job, and other responsibilities, I am easily distracted from exercise. I am glad that I have registered for 2 5k walks for May. Hopefully that will get me off the couch.

How do you stay motivated to exercise?

Busy week

It’s been a busy week for me. And it still isn’t Friday yet. I took Tuesday off to help my oldest daughter move into her first apartment. I’m glad I was able to help – but I was so tired the next day. I’m too old for this!

Moving day!

I have managed to stay on my healthy eating plan this week. It seems like I do better at sticking to this when I’m working. I suppose that is because I pack my healthy meals and that is all I have to choose from. But when I am home, I will go through the pantry, fridge, etc until I find something I want. And that is usually not a good thing.

I only choose the meals with no preservatives.

brown rice with vegetables
Greek yogurt with added blueberries

My favorite breakfast: oatmeal with blueberries

I also managed to get a few workouts in during this busy week. I will count moving as exercise since my daughter’s apartment is on the second floor. I didn’t count the number of times I went up and down those steps, but its more than I wished for. I also did a stationary bike workout this week while watching The Biggest Loser. And I am planning on exercising tonight. I bought a new PS3 Move exercise game. It’s called Get Fit With Mel B. It gets great reviews and I’ll looking forward to trying it out. Here’s a link to the website Get Fit with Mel B If you don’t know who she is, she was one of the Spice Girls. I’ll let you know details later.

I hope you are having a great week!

Ready for spring

Well, I’m glad to hear we may be in for an early spring from the results of Groundhog Day. I certainly hope so! We had warm weather in TN last weekend in the high 60’s and now its back in the 20’s today! I really miss the warm weather and sunshine!

I’m so proud of my daughter, Whitney. She gets up every morning at 6:00 a.m. and works out on the treadmill. I have trouble working out in the mornings – I’m not really a morning person and prefer to work out after work. She is making great strides in her weight loss. I think the best thing she has done is give up sugary drinks and exercise more. She is my inspiration! Go Whitney, Go!

Did you watch the Biggest Loser last night? I loved it when the Purple team almost brought Jillian to tears. Very touching….and brought me to tears also! I am really confused why the black team came on the show. Since neither of them really wanted to be there at all anyway. Someone that wanted to do the program could have taken their place. I’m not sure that I agree with the decision of which one of the Red team to send home. But the “family” made that decision.

I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!

Busy week

I haven’t had much time for blogging this week. It’s been a busy one! I’m looking forward to The Biggest Loser tonight. Any thoughts on Season 11? I really don’t like the contestants training with the unknowns being away from the rest of the contestants for the first 4 weeks. I don’t remember the contestants since I haven’t seen them.

My Tuesday ritual is to go home after work, eat a light, healthy dinner and watch my favorite show! I am also due for a workout today. So I will try and fit that in too. I did a Taebo workout on Sunday followed by a training run. I am still a little sore. I love the way Billy Blanks makes me feel so strong and powerful!

I took my daughters to Applebee’s for dinner last night. It was excellent. I ordered a spicy shrimp wrap. But….I woke up in the middle of the night so thirsty. It really makes you think twice about eating out when you don’t really know how much salt is added to their meals.

I hope you are having a wonderful week so far!

First event of 2011

I signed up for my first event for 2011! This will be my 3rd year to participate in March For Babies. This is a special cause to me because my first born daughter was premature. If you aren’t familar with this cause, “The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.” – March of Dimes website. You can support me or join my team by clicking on the link above or the box found on the left side of my webpage.

This is a 2 mile walk/run. So, I thought what better way to work up to running a 5k, than to do a 2 miler first. I have over 100 days until the event, so I’m going to work up to 2 miles and hopefully be able to run the whole thing. This will help me prepare for the 5k I will do in October. Baby steps. I’m still training on the Couch to 5k program, but have slacked a little. I have spent more time lately doing other cardio exercise than running. But it’s time to get back on track!

A few hours later I decided to workout. I wanted to see what my pace is for 2 miles so I know what to work on for the March for Babies event. After stretching and a 5 min ride on the stationary bike, I hit the treadmill.

I started with walking and eased into running. I was able to run .75 mi without stopping. That is a first for me. With the couch to 5k plan, I have been alternating between walking 2-3 min and running 2-3 min for several cycles. I was happy to see that I could run for longer than I expected. I walked most of the second mile but did a few bursts of running. I ended up finishing the 2 miles in around 36 minutes.

This must sound really slow to those of you that are professional runners, but for me this was about on track. Now I know what to work on. I’d like to be able to run the 2 miles non-stop first, then work on the speed. I’m glad I have over 100 days to get ready.

After my running workout, I decided to pop in my newest exercise DVD, The Biggest Loser Cardio max!

I love this workout! And the cool down/stretching section was just what I needed. I don’t want to be sore tomorrow!

I’m also using my Biggest Loser calendar to log my workouts.

I really like this calendar since it has recipes and tips included for each month.

I love the way working out makes me feel. When I lose motivation or feel like slacking off, I wish I could remember this!

Sleep deprived

It’s Tuesday and I have been sleepy all day. Last night I went with my husband and daughter to a WWE event. It was a fun night!

Eating at Joe’s Crab Shack before the event

WWE Raw!

Goofing off with Elvis in downtown Nashville!

Another issue was that a winter storm came the night before and we weren’t too sure about the condition of the roads. But everything worked out fine. Most of the roads were clear. We got enough snow to close the schools for 3 days so far this week! I took a picture when I woke up Monday morning….

Snowstorm in TN!

It was a lot of fun, but a late night for a week night. I’m usually in bed before 10 and it was well after midnight when I got to sleep. I had to get to work on time and it was a busy day. I was so glad to finally get home and relax. I did what I usually do on Tuesday nights – watch The Biggest Loser! It was a good episode. It is a little different this season, with some of the contestants working out with the “unknown trainers” – but it’s keeping it interesting!

Well, it’s time to get caught up on my sleep. G’night!

Cardio Max

I woke up to muscle soreness from the Cardio Max DVD I did yesterday. A little soreness is good. I decided to use the stationary bike and exercise ball to try and loosen up. I really like the DVD. I was surprised that several contestants from the last 2 seasons were on it. I didn’t realize this one was released recently. I got to workout with Sunshine, Tara, Ada, Ashley and Bob Harper! I think I’m gonna like this one.

I am also logging my workouts on my Biggest Loser calendar I bought last week at 75% off. Thats a sweet deal! The calendar is cool with tips and recipes from Bob and Jillian.

After working out, today was a pretty lazy day. I went out to lunch with my husband and daughter to Jason’s Deli. I love that place. They have an awesome salad bar with tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from. Here is a picture of my salad plate:

We bought a humidifier today. I’m hoping this will solve the sinus trouble I’ve been having. Fingers crossed.

I plan on relaxing for the rest of the evening and waiting for the snow to arrive. It’s always a big deal when snow is forecasted in Tennessee. People rush off to the grocery store for water, milk and bread – so I avoided those places. They are saying we might get several inches overnight and more tomorrow. I’m a little cynical though, it seems like when they say we are getting snow, it’s just a flake or two.

I hope you have a great week! Stick to your resolutions!

Snowy Saturday

Good morning! I woke up to it snowing! What a beautiful sight!

Plans for today include working out, cleaning the house a bit, and spending time with family while watching football. After having my morning espresso, of course. I have finally figured out how to use my machine!

Here are some pictures of my workout room that is still a work in progress.

My motivation wall!

My newest workout DVD purchase

We had a nice relaxing evening last night after I got off work. It had been a stressful work week, and I needed that! After sipping on a glass of wine, we played Green Day Rockband! I love it! I know their songs so well, that I could get 100% on the hard level.

We also got take out for dinner. Since I had been sticking to my healthy eating all week, I decided that I wanted Popeyes fried chicken. That has to be my favorite meal! Even more reason to get up and burn some calories today!
