Getting fit with family

image

My teenage daughter, Whitney has gotten on board with me with the healthy lifestyle thing. We went for a walk on the Greenway a few days ago. It was a beautiful sunny day and a great day for girl time! I’m so proud of her. She is trying to eat healthier and she even found some fitness apps on her IPhone. I hope I’ve been a healthy role model for her. That’s my goal – to inspire others.

Another road trip

It’s Friday and I am spending the day packing for a short road trip with my sister and my mom. We are leaving tomorrow morning to drive to Birmingham, AL for my cousin’s wedding. It’s been a while since us girls have taken a trip, so I’m looking forward to it. No husbands. No kids. Nice! It will be a short trip since we are only staying one night. But we always have fun, wherever we go. Pictures will follow!

Mom and my sis on one of our other adventures!

My dilemma is wondering if I will be able to workout while I am out of town and what healthy options there will be to choose from at the wedding. I am probably screwed! I scheduled Saturday and Sunday as rest days on my calendar, but having two days off in a row may be too much. I will take some healthy snacks with me, just in case. I doubt the wedding reception will offer healthy options, unless they have fruit. I will definitely have to kick up the workouts after I return, but I will pack my running shoes.

running shoes + pedometer + water = happy

Here are some of the snacks I’ll pack:

bottled water
nuts – almonds, sunflower seeds
organic granola bars
fruit- bananas and apples

How do you maintain your healthy lifestyle while on vacation? Do you find it easy or difficult?

Healthy Eating – USDA Choose My Plate

I just saw the USDA website for Choose My Plate. This looks much different from the usual Food Pyramid we are used to. This website have some very helpful tips and information. I encourage everyone to check it out!

I try my best to maintain a healthy diet, but living with teenagers and a husband who loves junk food makes it hard sometimes. I just try my best to keep the pantry and fridge stocked with healthy food so I’m not tempted to give in to the goodies! While on vacation, that was a different story. I drank soda, ate oreos, chips and other things that I usually never eat. As of yesterday, I am back on my healthy eating plan now and feel much better. I can tell a difference in the way I feel when I’m eating healthy. Here are some of my favorite healthy foods!

Oatmeal with organic blueberries

Green tea
veggies with brown rice

What are your favorite healthy foods?

Staying on track

I’m staying on track with fitness this week. One motivator is that I am scheduled to have my yearly physical soon. I have done well with sticking to healthy eating and exercising all week. So, it CAN be done! I really need to post a note somewhere where I can see it…to remind me about how much better I feel when I exercise and eat right. That alone should motivate me to stay on track! I am glad that I found a co-worker that likes to walk and we have started walking on our lunch break, as long as the weather allows us to. Unfortunately today that was not the case! We are having storms passing through Tennessee today with tornadoes and heavy thunderstorms. It looks like I’ll be hitting the treadmill when I get home.

I am very pleased to announce that I found a Couch to 5K challenge via @EatMoveWrite on Twitter a few days ago and I signed up. I began the program a while ago, but didn’t finish it. I want to start over with this challenge and make it through to the end! Here is the link to the challenge, if you are interested too! Couch 2 5K Challenge

Welcome to Gina’s pancake kitchen!

It’s a beautiful Saturday morning. The sun is shining and it looks like it will be a beautiful day. My daughter, Whitney has been wanting pancakes all week so I decided to get up and make pancakes for the family.

Tiger is enjoying the sunshine. This is one of his favorite places.

I made a batch of regular pancakes for everyone else and added a few more things for my pancake. Since my family isn’t into the healthy eating thing like I am, sometimes I have to prepare my food separately. I added frozen blueberries and flaxseed to the batter. It turned out great!

To go along with the pancakes, I made scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage.

And of course, COFFEE!

Tiger seems a little anxious for breakfast to get finished….

Now that breakfast is done, I’m going to see what I can do today to enjoy the sunshine. It has been rainy and chilly here all week. I welcome the sunshine and hope it decides to stay. I hope to add some walking or jogging to my day, as well.

Enjoy your weekend!!

Another month is almost over

It’s hard to believe that another month is almost over already! How are you doing with your goals? I must admit I have had a rough time sticking to my healthy living goals this month. I can usually stick to the healthy eating much better than the exercising part. It’s not too much trouble to pack a healthy lunch. That is a habit for me and I do that almost every day.

Its the exercising part that seems to disrupt my schedule. I know I have whined about this more than once this month already. I try to slip in a little exercise throughout my day, but it just doesn’t seem enough. I started feeling tired this week and I am sure that the loss of exercise in my life is the reason.

I really want to do the right thing. My excuse is always work. My job is stressful and sometimes my family life is stressful. This makes me tired exhausted….and I feel like I can’t get up and do it. And this causes me to be more exhausted. What a vicious circle! I am confident that April will be much better and I’ll get back on track. Meanwhile….I’m going to workout tonight. What should it be? Zumba, Taebo, weights, hmmmmm..

I’ll let you know what I decided.

Zumba!

Just for the record (after my earlier post today where I seemed to be whining) ….I wanted to report that I was able to get up and workout! I decided to do a Zumba workout since I have the PS3 game. It’s so much fun. And it really does feel more like a party than exercise. I do regret however, that I had to throw my husband out of the house for a few hours….since I needed the living room space to do it. Please forgive me, honey.

Zumba! Join the Party!

But I am very happy that I did it. I feel great!! Please someone remind me how good it makes me feel to workout. Now, I’m off for a healthy snack and to see what else the day has in store for me. I am going to get my monthly massage later at Massage Envy. That will be wonderful!

nonfat Greek yogurt = yummy!

Enjoy your day!

My Birthday

It was a long, exhausting week at work. But I made it! My birthday was on Thursday and I had to work so celebrating was postponed until Friday.

I did get some lovely flowers delivered to my office from my mom and my aunt. And my coworkers bought my lunch from Camino Real, our favorite mexican place. To top off my day, my daughter brought me a decadent cupcake from GiGi’s and sang/danced for me! I don’t even want to know how many calories that cupcake had.

Birthday flowers!!

I took Friday off work and my husband took me to lunch where I used my birthday coupon I received by email. Nice! I had a few friends over for drinks, snacks and to play Rock Band. We had a good time.

I’m looking forward to a relaxing day to recover from all the alcohol I had last night. I didn’t think I drank that much. But my friend made jello shots that tasted like there was double the amount of liquor that should have been in them. They were good but now I’m suffering from a headache. Must have coffee. Lots.

Later today I am scheduled for my monthly massage at Massage Envy. I am looking forward to feeling relaxed and revitalized!

I feel as if I have lost my motivation to exercise. Ugh. I hate it when that happens. I am determined to find a way to get back on track. I have so many options in my home to choose from: Exercise dvd’s, treadmill, stationary bike, Zumba and other fitness games on PS3. I don’t know what my problem is.

At least I have stuck to the eating healthy plan for the most part. A few splurges now and then, but I have made an effort to pack healthy lunches every day and drink plenty of water.

I know I can do it. I just need to figure out why I lose interest in exercise.
What do you do when you lose motivation? I’d love to hear your comments!

Busy week

It’s been a busy week for me. And it still isn’t Friday yet. I took Tuesday off to help my oldest daughter move into her first apartment. I’m glad I was able to help – but I was so tired the next day. I’m too old for this!

Moving day!

I have managed to stay on my healthy eating plan this week. It seems like I do better at sticking to this when I’m working. I suppose that is because I pack my healthy meals and that is all I have to choose from. But when I am home, I will go through the pantry, fridge, etc until I find something I want. And that is usually not a good thing.

I only choose the meals with no preservatives.

brown rice with vegetables
Greek yogurt with added blueberries

My favorite breakfast: oatmeal with blueberries

I also managed to get a few workouts in during this busy week. I will count moving as exercise since my daughter’s apartment is on the second floor. I didn’t count the number of times I went up and down those steps, but its more than I wished for. I also did a stationary bike workout this week while watching The Biggest Loser. And I am planning on exercising tonight. I bought a new PS3 Move exercise game. It’s called Get Fit With Mel B. It gets great reviews and I’ll looking forward to trying it out. Here’s a link to the website Get Fit with Mel B If you don’t know who she is, she was one of the Spice Girls. I’ll let you know details later.

I hope you are having a great week!

Migrane

I’ve been sick for a few days this week. I have not been able to get my workouts in and my healthy eating plan has consisted of eating crackers and drinking Sprite. The feeling of nausea I have had for several days was the onset of a migrane. I should have thought of that. If I had taken a migrane pill a few days ago, I would have been better days ago. I haven’t had a migrane in months, and I usually don’t get the nausea with them. But, once I figured that out, I took a pill this afternoon which made me sleep for 4-5 hours. I feel much better. I am so glad. I don’t like feeling bad. I have tried to work at home some but I’m sure I’ll be behind at work next week after missing 2 days of work. I’ll probably have to go to the office this weekend to see how much work is piled on my desk.

I think I’ll run in the morning.  Murfreesboro weather is forecasted to be mild and an outdoor run sounds lovely. The treadmill is getting boring to me.

While I slept today, Tiger was getting into everything! He loves exploring and was missing the attention he usually gets from me.

Have a great weekend!
